The Hospice Cantonaux CHUV, University of Lausanne, in Switzerland is a public non-profit institution dedicated to the improvement of human health through patient care, research and training, providing general hospital needs for the city of Lausanne and its area. It has an annual budget of CHF 1.61 billion. External research grants per year are in the range of CHF 70-80 million. The Service of Immunology and Allergy, headed by Prof Giuseppe Pantaleo, is an established group of investigators supported by the Swiss National Foundation, the European Union, the National Institute of Health, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
With regard to the PERISCOPE project, Pantaleo’s group will provide unique expertise in the characterization of innate immunity, B- and T-cell immune responses specific to Bp. In particular, Pantaleo’s group activities will focus on work package 5 and will comprise analyses at single cell level. In this regard, recently developed powerful platforms such as Fluidigm for gene expression at single cell level and mass cytometry (CyTOF) for comprehensive phenotypic, functional and signalling analyses (up to 40 markers simultaneously). Analyses will be performed on blood samples collected in the clinical studies planned within PERISCOPE.
Giuseppe Pantaleo is Chief of the Service of Immunology and Allergy and of the Laboratory of AIDS Immunopathogenesis at the Hospice Cantonaux CHUV, University of Lausanne, Switzerland. He is also Executive Director of the Swiss Vaccine Research Institute. Prof Pantaleo has made seminal contribution in the field of the immunopathogenesis of HIV infection. He has shown that HIV disease is active and progressive during the period of clinical latency. Furthermore, he has also made substantial contribution to the characterization of virus specific T-cell responses.
